Frank Lampard’s decision to bring on Christian Pulisic early in the second half paid off within five minutes of being on the pitch. He netted home the first for Chelsea and Olivier Giroud two minutes later sealed the victory against Aston Villa.
105 days since Chelsea had last played, but it didn’t show as they dominated the game, but were unable to grab a goal in the first half and fell behind at the break.
Villa’s central defender Kortney Hause scrambled home a late first-half cross, ugly, but it got the job done and Villa headed into the second half one up.
Into the second half and Lampard makes the change to bring on Pulisic in replace for Ruben Loftus-Cheek who, like Pulisic, was returning from a long spell on the sidelines due to injury.
Pulisic struck the ball into the roof of the net after a delightful ball from man of the match Cesar Azpilicueta. Two minutes later Azpilicueta was at it again after receiving the ball from Mason Mount inside the box, he squared it to Giroud who swivelled and shot and it went in after a big deflection.
Villa had a chance at the end to grab it, but Jota just missed the with his low shot and Villa continue on for the fight for survival in the Premier League.
Lampard said on Pulisic, “He was hungry, I know that and I felt for him, as I felt for all the players with longterm injury’s”.
Chelsea would have felt they should have scored more with 19 attempts on target, the struggle of their season so far is finishing off games. Hopefully, with the signing of Timo Werner, it can improve for them.
Aston Villa travel to Newcastle on the 24th June and Chelsea host Manchester City on the 25th June.
