Newcastle United defeats in-form Sheffield United with a goal from out-of-form, Joelinton.
A lot has happened in 2,130 minutes. Many months and games have gone by, but for Joelinton, Newcastle’s £40 million striker, this is how long he had gone without hitting the back of the net.
You wouldn’t have blamed Steve Bruce if he thought that the drought would continue when Joelinton went one-on-one with Dean Henderson in the first half and was tackled by what looked like the grass. But in the second half, Joelinton would tap in Newcastle’s third goal from Miguel Almiron’s cross.
Allan Saint-Maximin put Newcastle ahead after an embarrassing miss-kick from Enda Stevens that left Maximin alone to score against Henderson.
By this point, Sheffield united were already down to 10-man 5 minutes before when John Egan had been shown a second yellow card after pulling back Joelinton. The second yellow card you could not argue about, but the first booking will have Chris Wilder fuming because it was so needless. Egan was fouled and the referrer had blown for the foul and he tried to get the ball back from Joellinton. Of course like all footballers these days, they don’t give the ball back and Joellinton took offence to this and the two players went face to face. All David Coote had to do was have a talk with both of them and calm them down, instead, both received a yellow.
United’s defensive display was poor all game, nothing like we had seen before lockdown. They looked unreliably and at a loss with each other.
Matt Richie made it two after he was allowed to run at the United defensive unchallenged and he smacked the ball into the net from just inside the area.
You would consider that is a very important three points for Newcastle considering both their league positions. That is one point in the last two games for Chris Wilders men, who need to keep the pressure on the teams above to claim a historic European place with their first season back in the Premier League.
Newcastle host Aston Villa on the 24th June and Sheffield United are at Manchester United on the same day.
