As sport is now starting to get underway during these difficult times, this weekend has a host of amazing sporting accomplishments, debut wins and trophy winners. Here is a bitesize look at this weekends sporting action.

Arsenal claim FA Community Shield on penalties

FA Cup champions Arsenal drew first blood this season claiming the Community Shield against Liverpool on penalties. The game, taking place behind closed doors at Wembley, pitted two sides that will contest top-four honours this season. It took the Gunners just 12 minutes to get on the scoresheet as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s curling shot found the back of the net. Liverpool finally got on level terms on 73 minutes after pushing for the equaliser for much of the second half. Takumi Minamino scored his first goal for the club. The game went straight to penalties after the 90 minutes. The shootout was level at two apiece when Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster missed his spot-kick. Arsenal claimed the trophy 5-4 with Aubameyang netting the final penalty.

Lyon win seventh UCL Women’s title

Premier women’s football club, Lyon, won their seventh Champions League title. The French club claimed a 3-1 win against Germany’s Wolfsburg in the showpiece final. Lyon’s Eugenie Le Sommer opened the scoring in the 25th minute to send the team on their way. Saki Kumagai doubled Lyon’s lead just before the half. Wolfsburg came out of the dressing room focused and performed better. Their improved play led to German international Alexandra Popp pulling a goal back on 58 minutes. Iceland’s Sara Gunnarsdottir killed the game off with two minutes to go. Lyon’s Champions League win capped off a treble of trophies as they lifted the Division 1 Feminine and Coupe de France Feminine prior to the final versus Wolfsburg.

Teenage Ramus Hojgaard wins on the European Tour

Nineteen-year-old Danish golfer Ramus Hojgaard won for the second time on the European Tour thanks to a rally that erased a five-shot deficit at the UK Championship. Hojgaard’s rally forced a playoff between Hojgaard and South Africa’s Justin Walters. The Dane coolly knocked in a two-foot putt for par to claim his second win on the European Tour.

Denver Nuggets force Game 7 versus Utah Jazz

The Denver Nuggets came back from a 3-1 series deficit to tie their NBA First Round Playoff series. The Nuggets won 117-107 in Game 5 before registering a 119-107 victory five days later in Game 6. Denver’s Jamal Murray scored 50 points for the second time in the series to lead all scorers in Game 6. NBA superstars Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, and Kawhi Leonard all powered their respective teams into the NBA Conference Semifinals.

Jon Rahm wins FedEx playoff in spectacular fashion

In a battle of the two best golfers in the world, Jon Rahm sank a 66-foot putt for birdie to win the BMW Championship. Rahm’s 18th hole birdie topped World No. 1 golfer Dustin Johnson, whose 43-foot putt forced the playoff, had the chance to extend the head to head. However, Johnson missed a 30-foot putt to hand Rahm the BMW Championship.

Lewis Hamilton dominates in Spa

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton extended his push for a seventh Formula One World Championship with a victory at Spa. Hamilton led from the start, dominating the race from pole position. Mercedes’ top driver won for the fifth time this season in F1 as the race series becomes more lopsided due to Hamilton’s form.
