The Houston Texans were dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs in the opening match of the 2020-21 NFL season, the score of 20-34 doesn’t show how one-sided this game was. Patrick Mahomes controlled the game with 3 TD passes in the first half and threw for a total of 211 passing yards with zero interceptions.
Russell Wilson punishes leaky Falcons defence
The next game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons was less one-sided but even though the Falcons offence performed great, their defence was abysmal so the Russel Wilson-led offence from the Seahawks easily won the game 38-25. Wilson threw 4 TD passes and debutant safety Jamal Adams, recorded 12 tackles and 1 sack. Even though on the losing team, Julio Jones had 9 catches for 157 yards still showing the danger that the Atlanta Falcons can bring.
The Bills beat the Jets on opening day for the second year in a row
The game between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills was only close because of two fumbles from Josh Allen, but Allen still showed his potential to be a superstar this season with 312 yards, 2 TD passes and a rushing TD. The one-sided game was won by Buffalo 17-27.
The Chicago Bears fight back against the Detroit Lions
One of the closest game of the week was between the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions. Mitchell Trubisky threw 3 TD passes in the fourth quarter to snatch away the lead from the Lions. Matthew Stafford had the chance to win the game, but his pass in the endzone was dropped by D’andre Swift.
Aaron Rodgers dominates against the Vikings
Aaron Rodgers’ strong performance leads the Green Bay Packers to a 43-34 win against the Minnesota Vikings. Rodgers threw four TD passes for 364 yards in a dominate display against a non-threatening Vikings team. Another standout performance was Devante Adams with 14 catches, 2 TD and for 156 yards. At the other end, Dalvin Cook can be happy with his performance getting 2 rushing TD’s.
Cam Newton shines for the New England Patriots
A strong QB performance came from Cam Newton who looked very strong with 2 rushing TD’s and 155 passing yards. The game was comfortable for the new-look New England Patriots who picked of the Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick 3 times in a 21-11 win.
Defence wins the game in Coach Ron Rivera’s first game for Washington
In his first game for the new named Washington Football Team, Ron Rivera’s team showed great determination and fight to come back from a 17-0 deficit. An amazing defensive line performance from the Washington Football Team who dominated Philadelphia’s offensive line. Carson Wentz was sacked 8 times and threw two interceptions.
The Las Vegas Raiders hold off the Carolina Panthers
The Las Vegas Raiders manage to hold off the Carolina Panthers behind a strong performance from sophomore running back Josh Jacobs who scored 3 touchdowns. Debutant Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater threw 1 TD pass and had 270 passing yards.
The Jacksonville Jaguars throw an upset against the Indianapolis Colts
The game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Jacksonville Jaguars was also decided by a sophomore, but this time it was QB Gardner Minshew with an almost perfect display throwing 19/20. Minshew led the Jaguars to a close 20-27 victory after the Colts QB, Philip Rivers, threw an interception with 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Baltimore Ravens show their class against a defenceless Cleveland Browns
The Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson continued where they left off last year in suburb form. Last years MVP, Jackson, threw for 275 yards and had 3 TD’s. The Browns had no answer. Baker Mayfield had 1189 yards, 1 TD and 1 interception.
Joe Burrows shows class for the Bengals despite defeat
Despite a solid performance from 2020 number one draft pick Joe Burrows, the Cincinnati Bengals still lost 16-13 to the Los Angeles Chargers. Burrows thought he had thrown the game-winning TD to A.J Green, but it was called for offensive pass interference. So, it was given to kicker Reggie Bullock to tie the game with a 31-yard field, but he missed to give the Chargers the win.
New Orleans Saints defeat Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers
In the most anticipated game the New Orleans Saints won convincingly against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who were held back by a struggling offence that looked out of sync. Tom Brady scored the first of the game and of his new buccaneer’s career by rushing 2 yards after a nine-play drive starting on their own 15-yard line. Drew Brees took the game by the scruff of the neck and the Saints had 17 without reply in the second quarter which finished the game.
The Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murray shock the 49ers
The biggest upset in week 1 was the Arizona Cardinals beating the San Francisco 49ers 24-20 after an amazing night from newly formed star duo Kyler Murray and Deandre Hopkins.
The Los Angeles Rams beat the Dallas Cowboys in the new SoFi stadium
The Los Angeles Rams won their opener against the Dallas Cowboys 17-20 in the new multi-billion dollar SoFi stadium. Malcolm Brown rushed for a career-high 79 yards and had two TD’s along with Jared Geoff who passed for 275 yards.
The Pittsburgh Steelers comfortably beat the New York Giants
The Pittsburgh Steelers had Ben Roethlisberger back after almost a year out with injury and defeated the weak New York Giants. The Steelers were in control the whole game against the sloppy New York Giants defence. ‘Big Ben’ threw 3 TD passes, with two of them to JuJu Smith-Schuster and the other to James Washington.
Tennessee Titans get the win with a last gasp field goal
The Tennessee Titans closed the week by beating the Denver Broncos 16-14 after a last-second game-winning field goal from Stephen Gostkowski. In a very tight game against the Denver Broncos which went to the wire, Gostkowski had missed 4 previous field goals which would have comfortably given the Titans the victory, but his 5th and final 31-yard field goal made it to give Tennessee the win.
