The Euro Championship Recap: Semi-Finals

We bring you all the biggest headlines from this week’s latest action at Euro 2020. Italy host Spain whilst England take on Denmark with both semi-final matches taking place at Wembley Stadium in London.

Italy beat Spain on penalties to reach grand final

Italy are the first team to book their place in the final of Euro 2020 after beating Spain 4-2 on penalties following a brilliant end-to-end encounter.

Roberto Mancini’s men took the lead on the hour-mark through a counter-attack when Aymeric Laporte’s defensive clearance fell straight into the path of Federico Chiesa who curled a magnificent long-range strike beyond the reach of Unai Simon.

Spain found the equaliser on 80 minutes when the substitute Alvaro Morata played a one-two with Dani Olmo to fire his effort low into the bottom left-hand corner.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in extra-time meaning that the game went to spot-kicks and even though the Azzurri failed to convert their first penalty, they coolly netted the rest and with Morata missing his from 12-yards out, it was down to Chelsea’s Jorginho who sent the keeper the wrong way to send his team through to the final.

England reach a major men’s final for the first time since 1966

England have officially ended their 55-year wait to reach a major men’s final after they beat Denmark 2-1 in extra-time at Wembley.

The Danes opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Mikkel Damsgaard hit a thunderous free-kick beyond the reach of Jordan Pickford who conceded his first goal of the tournament so far.

Gareth Southgate’s men got the equaliser on 39 minutes when Bukayo Saka fizzed a low ball across the face of goal with the Denmark captain Simon Kjaer turning into his own net from close range.

After Kasper Schmeichel made a fantastic save to deny Harry Maguire late on, the game required an additional 30 minutes to be played and it was England who capitalised on the opportunity.

Raheem Sterling ended up being brought down inside the area by Joakim Maehle with Harry Kane missing the initial penalty but quickly following up the rebound to secure victory for his team.

Euro 2020 Grand Final
